From the 3rd Century to the 10th Century AD, Tikal was the dominant political, economic and military power in the Mayan world. Mystery surrounds the city’s decline. There is evidence that the city’s palaces were burned, and the city was abandoned by the end of the 10th Century. One can only guess that wars, combined with a gradual population decline culminated in the site being abandoned by the end of the 10th century.
